13-inch vs 15-inch MacBook Air: find your everyday workspace
The larger Air can make a reading and a paper easier to work on together. The smaller one is easier to fit into a bag and use on a crowded desk. Neither advantage means much until you connect it to the places you work.
Think about class, the commute, the home desk and any external monitor you already own. Comparing two matching configurations will then let you judge the price of extra screen space, without confusing it with a different processor or more memory.
Think about the two windows you open together
A single document does not always reveal the value of a bigger display. Put a research paper beside your notes, a spreadsheet beside an email, or an editor beside its preview. The 15.3-inch Air gives those combinations more breathing room than the 13.6-inch model.
That can make a difference if the laptop is your only screen. You may spend less time resizing windows and switching between reference material and the thing you are making. The benefit is the workspace, rather than a guarantee that the same task computes faster.
The 13-inch Air remains comfortable for people who tend to concentrate on one application at a time. If most of your study involves reading and drafting, consider whether you actually want two windows visible or simply assume that larger must be better.
Portability includes the surface you have available
The 13-inch M5 Air weighs 1.23kg; the 15-inch weighs 1.51kg. The difference may seem modest in isolation, but the laptop also needs to fit the spaces where you open it.
Measure your bag's laptop compartment rather than relying only on the advertised screen size. Think about narrow café tables, shared classroom desks, and the space left for a notebook. A computer that is easy to carry but awkward to use on your usual table still creates friction.
If you regularly carry the laptop all day and return to a monitor at home, the compact Air has a strong case. If your laptop moves only between a couple of roomy desks, accepting the larger body may be a very worthwhile trade.
A larger Air is not automatically a faster Air
The M5 Air family offers different GPU configurations, so compare the exact chip rather than the size alone. The 15-inch configuration used here has 10 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores. A 13-inch Air is also available with that chip combination.
With matching chip, memory, and storage, a benchmark graph of two identical chips would not help you choose the screen. More importantly, a 15-inch model with insufficient memory is not necessarily a better purchase than a well-equipped 13-inch model.
If your work regularly fills memory with large projects or several demanding applications, settle that capacity first. Decide on the screen with the remaining budget. Both sizes are fanless, so moving up in Air screen size is not a move to the Pro's actively cooled design.
An external monitor changes the calculation
The current M5 Air supports two external displays alongside its built-in screen. A compact Air can therefore be part of a generous desk setup while remaining small enough for daily travel.
That does not help during the hours you work away from the monitor. A student who writes in the library for most of the week may benefit more from the 15-inch display than someone who works mainly at a fixed desk. Count the places and hours that matter to you.
Also consider whether you want to purchase a monitor at all. For someone renting a small room or moving frequently, a larger laptop may be the simplest workspace to own. There is value in needing fewer pieces of equipment.
Make the price comparison fair
The histories below compare the Canadian 13-inch and 15-inch M5 Air with matching 10-core CPU/10-core GPU chips, 16GB of memory, and 512GB of storage. That keeps the configuration difference out of the screen-size decision.

Check the final price with sales tax and any bag or desk equipment you need. If the 15-inch premium would force you to cut necessary memory or storage, revisit the priorities. A comfortable display should support your work, not create a new limitation elsewhere.
The 13-inch Air fits best when portability and an existing desk monitor shape your week. The 15-inch is compelling when the laptop screen is the place you do most of your work. Compare both Air sizes on WhichM with the same configuration so you can see what the larger workspace actually costs.
