MacBook Air M3 or M4: read the older-model offer properly

An M3 Air and an M4 Air can look so similar in a retailer's listing that the lower price seems like an easy win. Then you read the memory capacity or notice that one offer is refurbished and the other is new old stock.

Those details can matter more than the model year alone. Give both laptops a fair comparison by looking at their actual configurations, the desk setup they support and the condition of the machine being sold.

Memory is the first detail to read carefully

M3 Air listings can contain 8GB, 16GB, or 24GB of memory, depending on the configuration. The M4 Air starts at 16GB and offers up to 32GB. An inexpensive 8GB M3 is therefore a different proposition from an M4 with 16GB.

For a laptop focused on writing, research, and a modest group of everyday applications, the cheaper machine may cover the work you expect. If you keep several demanding applications open or work with larger creative projects, the memory difference deserves more weight.

Do not treat a larger SSD as evidence of more memory. A listing with 512GB describes file storage, while its 8GB or 16GB figure describes working capacity. Read both, and confirm them on the actual computer when buying privately.

A desk with two monitors can make the choice clearer

The M3 Air can support a second external display with its lid closed. The M4 Air supports two external displays while its own screen remains available. That distinction can matter if you want a three-screen working arrangement.

If you only use one external monitor, it may change very little. Think about the desk you intend to use, including whether a dock, cables, and charging arrangement support the displays you already own.

The M4 also brings a 12MP Center Stage camera in place of the M3 Air's 1080p FaceTime HD camera. For someone who spends much of the week in online classes or calls, that is a more tangible upgrade than a processor label alone.

An M4 offer can add memory and desk flexibility, but the exact listing still determines its value.

Use processor performance to answer a specific question

A newer chip can help when the work regularly asks for more processing. It will matter differently to someone compiling projects or processing images than to someone primarily reading and writing.

The chart compares the M3 with 8 CPU/8 GPU cores and the M4 with 10 CPU/8 GPU cores using a multi-core CPU metric. This isolates one processing comparison, not the experience of an 8GB laptop against a 16GB laptop.

If your difficulty is running out of memory or managing a full SSD, a chip upgrade alone does not describe the solution. Give the configuration that addresses the problem priority over a generational ranking.

An older laptop is also an individual used product

A refurbished M3 with a clear battery policy and useful return arrangements can be more reassuring than an M4 listing with little information. A privately used M4 can be excellent, but you need to evaluate its condition rather than borrowing confidence from the newer model year.

Inspect the screen, keyboard, ports, and charger. Review battery health and cycle count together, recognizing that neither figure tells the whole story. Check that the machine can be erased and set up for you without Activation Lock or an unexpected organization-management restriction.

For a new old-stock offer, confirm whether the machine is actually new, what accessories are included, and who provides service if there is a problem. Similar photos do not establish similar terms.

Compare equivalent capacity before choosing the saving

The UK price histories here use 13-inch M3 and M4 Air configurations with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage. The M3 is the 8-core GPU variant. They give a consistent configuration reference, rather than valuing the battery or condition of a particular used unit.

The M3 is attractive when the saving is meaningful and its memory, condition, and display support fit your plans. The M4 becomes more persuasive when the price gap is small or you will use the camera, extra memory options, or external-display arrangement.

If you already own a comfortable M3 setup, identify a concrete limitation before replacing it. For a new purchase, compare the M3 and M4 Air on WhichM using matching capacity, then assess the seller's actual laptop and complete price.
