MacBook Air M4 vs M5: is the older offer the better purchase?
An older MacBook Air becomes interesting as soon as its price drops close enough to your budget. The newer M5 is still tempting, but an M4 might leave money for the memory you want, an external monitor, or simply a smaller bill.
The difficult part is that the two cheapest listings may not describe equivalent laptops. Before comparing generations, bring the screen size, memory, storage, and condition into the same picture. That is often where the real value of an older offer becomes clear.
Read the configuration before the discount
The 2025 M4 Air starts with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage. The current M5 Air starts with 16GB and 512GB. A lower M4 headline price may therefore include half the storage of the M5 you are comparing it with.
For someone whose documents and applications fit comfortably within 256GB, that can be a sensible saving. For someone already juggling photo libraries or study projects, it may only move an expense to an external drive or a more expensive M4 configuration.
Memory deserves the same attention. Both generations offer up to 32GB, but the exact listing matters. A 24GB M4 may suit a busy development or creative setup better than a 16GB M5 if memory capacity is the constraint that actually affects the work.
Decide what a newer chip would change in your week
Most people do more than wait for a processor. Research, writing, video calls, and spreadsheets include long stretches of reading and thinking. A newer chip does not transform all of those moments equally.
For repeated builds, image processing, or other CPU-intensive tasks, performance differences deserve more attention. This chart compares the 10-core CPU/8-core GPU versions of M4 and M5 using a multi-core CPU metric. It provides one view of their processing capacity, rather than a promised reduction in the time your own project takes.
M4 Base · 10 CPU, 8 GPU vs M5 Base · 10 CPU, 8 GPU
Multi-Core benchmark · Score
| Chip | Score |
|---|---|
| M4 Base · 10 CPU, 8 GPU | 13578 |
| M5 Base · 10 CPU, 8 GPU | 17763 |
Both Air generations are fanless. If your reason for upgrading is sustained heavy processing over long periods, consider whether an actively cooled MacBook Pro belongs in the comparison too. Moving one Air generation forward is a different decision from changing the class of laptop.
The M4 already includes several useful everyday features
The M4 Air supports two external displays while its own screen remains in use and includes a 12MP Center Stage camera. Those features are not exclusive reasons to choose the M5. An M4 buyer does not have to assume an older offer means a much simpler desk setup.
The M5 adds newer wireless capabilities and supports internal storage options up to 4TB, compared with 2TB on the M4 Air. Those can matter for a particular network setup or a large on-the-go library. They are less persuasive if your current network and 512GB storage choice already cover your needs.
For a fuller side-by-side view, compare the 2025 M4 Air specifications with the current Air specifications. Focus on differences you can connect to something you do.
Use matching storage to judge the price gap
These US histories show 13-inch M4 and M5 Air configurations with 16GB of memory, 512GB of storage, and their respective 8-core GPU chips. That creates a clearer starting point than comparing the two cheapest configurations.

Then compare the actual offers you can buy, including sales tax, shipping, and the seller's terms. New old stock, open-box, refurbished, and privately used machines are different propositions even when their specification lines match.
For a used or refurbished M4, battery condition and an honest description of wear can outweigh a modest saving. Check the return arrangements and what happens if the laptop arrives with a fault. The model year cannot tell you how well a particular unit has been treated.
If you already own an M4, the question is different
A good purchase for someone replacing an old laptop is not automatically a useful upgrade for an M4 owner. Identify the problem your current machine fails to solve. If it still handles your normal projects comfortably, replacing it may change less than buying the right monitor, storage, or software tool.
For a new buyer, the M4 is attractive when a meaningful saving remains after matching the specification and checking the offer. The M5 becomes easier to justify when its specific improvements matter or the price gap becomes small. Compare M4 and M5 Air configurations on WhichM around that practical gap.
